Environmental Site Assessment Project

The required project for this course is a "modified" environmental site assessment of a facility in Marion County. The site chosen for this project is the city/county fire truck repair garage. This facility was built just a few years ago and gives students a good example of a clean and environmentally sound (i.e., "state of the art") facility. The site was formerly occupied by the city animal control facility (i.e., "dog pound"), which was in existence in the early 1940's and perhaps earlier. Adjacent to the new facility is the former repair garage, which was in use for several decades prior to construction of the new facility. This older garage is presently not in use and the land adjacent to it has had multiple uses extending back to the 1940's.

The project for this course will entail the following: 1) A detailed background search of the land use in and around the present-day facility. This includes a historical overview of the locality, including, at least a 50-year record of aerial photographs and topographic maps. For sources of information, click Data. 2) Walk-through of facility and interviews. This is the most important part of the project so detailed notes and comments during this phase are essential. A checklist will be given to each person to ensure that all necessary steps are completed. 3) Compilation of data. 4) Written report.

Data: Various sources of information available for an environmental site assessment records search.

Aerial Photography: These images were scanned from the historical aerial photograph collection at the NRCS Marion County Field Office.  The actual site for this project is the approximate center of the photographs. These images can be copied and downloaded into another program for viewing and modification, or you can click on the highlighted years to check out some "blow-ups" of the original images.
