Field Work

Geology involves a great deal of fieldwork. It is hoped that you will find these experiences valuable to you. An early lessen we all learn is that preparation is key to a successful field excursion. The following resources are intended to help prepare you for these experiences.

Equipment Lists


Field Equipment

  • Rock hammer
  • Hand lens
  • Compass
  • Pen Knife
  • Phi-finder Plastic
  • acid bottle with 10% HCl
  • Small ruler with protractor
  • Waterproof notebook
  • Engineer scale
  • Pencils and erasers
  • Pens (waterproof ink) and colored pencils
  • Waterproof, permanent marking pens for sample labeling
  • Day pack
  • Water bottle or canteen
  • Magnet
  • Camera and film (optional)

Camping Gear

  • Waterproof hiking boots
  • Rain gear
  • Sleeping bag and foam pad
  • Hat and gloves
  • Coat (appropriate for weather)
  • Dress in layers: T-shirt, sweatshirt, sweater, etc. (Not only can the temperature change, but as you work you will warm up)
  • Extra shoes or sneakers can be useful.
  • Clean dry socks.
  • Towel, washcloth, etc.
  • Toilet articles: soap, shampoo, toothbrush, etc.
  • Tent (share when possible)
  • Ground cloth (for under tent)
  • Eating utensils: Cup, plate, Fork, etc.
  • Cooking utensils: Pots, Pans, etc. (only one set necessary for entire group)
