INSTRUCTIONS FOR THIS PROJECT

The purpose of this project is to observe different soil types in the field, to learn the techniques of describing soil profiles and to make an interpretation of their formation.

Part A: Soil Maps and Soil Types

We will investigate different soil types in the study area using a soil survey map & a  push core to obtain samples.  We will also relate the soil types to the topography and parent material in the area.

Part B: Measurement and Description of Soil Profiles

We will describe in detail three different soil types in this area.  We will attempt to determine the parent materials for the soil-stratigraphic units (soil profiles). They should be described in your notes.

Beginning at the top of the section, define, measure, and describe all soil horizons. Include all important aspects of soil morphology following the instructions in Chapter 5. Fill in the data table provided.

On graph paper, sketch the profile using the format given in class. Use an appropriate vertical scale.

Part C: Discussion

In two to five pages, compare the soil profiles that you have described and relate the differences to variations in the five factors of soil formation. Cite evidence from your work to support your discussion.

Additional Information

Your completed report should consist of

  1. Data table
  2. Sketch of Profile
  3. Field notes
  4. Discussion

Students may do the field work in groups but must prepare individual reports.

You have one field session to complete the work on this project. The project is due at the beginning of class on April 2, 1999. The project is worth 80 points. A penalty will be assesses in grading late reports.
