G303
GEOLOGIC MAPPING AND FIELD METHODS

Mechanics of the Course

Student Background: All students should have a background equivalent to that acquired in G206, G209, and G222.

Sources: Material for each project will be distributed individually.  Additionally, there are other resources that will be suggested during the semester, most of which are available within the Geology Department collections.

Projects:
  1. The nine projects in the tentative schedule are the main components of G303.  They are designed as opportunities to apply techniques for the study of geology in the field..
  2. The projects range in scope and difficulty, and this is reflected in the time allotted for field work and project completion.
  3. Six of the nine projects involve field work.  You must plan to be present on all tentatively scheduled field days.
  4. Prior to beginning each project, the subject will be introduced and discussed in class. Projects will be graded following criteria that will be distributed before the due date for a given project.  Students have the responsibility to be sure that the criteria are understood.  If not, please ask!
  5. A penalty will be imposed in grading projects turned in late:

Occurrence Penalty
1st 10% per day
2nd 20% per day
3rd 100%

Exams:
  1. One field exam will be given, oriented toward application of field techniques learned during the course.
