Geologic Mapping and Field Methods
There is a reference available on this topic available for this course. "Planning for Field Safety" by AGI. It will be available either in the Geology Department Conference Room (SL 118A) or in the undergradute computing cluster (SL 049). The more important sections to read are the pages in the following chapters: 1 (p. 1-8, 18-20), 2 (p. 21-22), 3 (p. 37-47), 5 (p. 89-101, 103-113), (p. 162-165). These sections are also listed on a page in the book, so there is no need to copy them or waste paper by printing this page.
Fieldwork in geology often involves work in relatively dangerous places. Outcrops, road cuts, stream beds, soil pits all involve some amount of danger. It is your job to minimize the possibility of anyone getting hurt. Therefor it is paramount that you know how to conduct yourselves so as to maximize your effectiveness and minimize the risk of injury. While no discussion can cover all necessary points of risk prevention, it is important for you to review this document and mentally prepare yourself for fieldwork.
