ADDITIONAL COURSE INFORMATION

COURSE OBJECTIVES: The objectives are to understand the properties of a natural gemstone and discuss in greater depth a few examples.  A comparison will be made of natural gemstones and the common simulants, synthetics, and assembled stones.  We will also discuss information on the different types of gemstone enhancements used today and the different modes of formation for gemstones.  As an application of lab procedures used to identify gemstones, there will be a  lab with gemstone samples to identify.

DROP: Once you are registered and pay your fees, you are formally enrolled in G130. If you want to drop the course, you must fill out a "drop" form, which you must obtain from your advisor. That will officially clear the records. However, if you suddenly stop coming to class and do not fill out the "drop" form, you will receive an automatic F for the course.

NOTE: A grade of 0 is given for a regularly-scheduled exam which is missed, as make-up exams are not normally given. Exceptions are sometimes made, but only for those who notify the instructor before the exam that an absence is imminent. It is departmental policy not to give incompletes.

THE COURSE GRADE IS BASED ON THE FOLLOWING:

Lab Worksheet: 50 points
Internet and Handout Exercise: 30 points
Final Exam: 135 points
Totals: 215  POINTS

ATTENDANCE:

Attendance is mandatory.  You could lose 10% of your final grade for every class you miss.  I may choose to fail students who consistently do not appear for class.  Exceptions will be made for valid excuses: illness, deaths, etc.
