Betsy Fife endows $1.5 million gift to the School of Science in honor of chemistry chair emeritus

INDIANAPOLIS -- The School of Science at IUPUI has received a $1.5 million planned gift from Betsy L. Fife. The gift will endow a chair within the chemistry department in honor of Fife's late husband, Wilmer K. Fife. fife-portrait2.gif

Previously unknown mechanism causes increased forest water use, new study says

In a study published in the journal Science Advances, the researchers report the mechanism works this way: Sulfuric and nitric acid fall to the ground when fossil fuels are burned, causing acidification of the soil. When that happens, a significant amount of soil calcium washes out of the soil, and then plants suffer from calcium deficiency. Calcium deficiency causes the plants to intensify their use of water.

 

Shiaofen Fang will serve as School of Science Interim Dean

IUPUI Chancellor Nasser H. Paydar recently announced an interim dean appointment for the School of Science. Shiaofen Fang, Ph.D., professor and chair of the Department of Computer and Information Science, has been chosen to serve as interim dean of the School of Science effective July 1, 2019.dsc_1850.jpg
