Undergraduate research

Participating in undergraduate research is an excellent way for students to challenge themselves, build relationships with senior researchers, and add depth to their university experience.

As early as freshman year, students in the School of Science can engage in research assignments with faculty mentors. Undergraduate researchers receive financial support, gain access to advanced lab equipment, and enjoy the opportunity to work one-on-one with renowned faculty. Many students present their research at national meetings, and their findings are occasionally published in scientific journals.

Upon graduation, research experience gives students an edge in graduate school, medical school, and their careers.

To get started, interested students should contact a faculty member whose interests align with their own. Students can also talk to their academic advisor about research opportunities.

Research Funding

The Center for Research and Learning maintains a list of many IUPUI sponsored Undergraduate Funding Opportunities. Several of these that may be of interest to you include the University Research Opportunities Program (UROP), Multidisciplinary undergraduate research institute (MURI), and Commitment to Excellence in STEM Scholarship (contact Angel Campbell).

Life-Health Sciences Internships

Life-Health Sciences Internships connect IUPUI life and health sciences undergraduates with research and professional experience internships on and near the IUPUI campus. This program helps students to explore their career objectives and future career pathways while also fostering valuable professional connections between students and faculty and staff. The students belong to a community of interns and mentors who support one another throughout the internship experience and beyond. Internships run from the end of August to the beginning of May. Positions pay $10 per hour for up to 10 hours per week (15 weeks per semester for two semesters). Learn more and apply.

Mathematical Biosciences Institute Research Program for Visiting Undergraduates

This eight-week research project with the School of Science at IUPUI is part of an interdisciplinary research program coordinated by the Mathematical Biosciences Institute (MBI) in Columbus, Ohio.
